Why Use the Four Elements?
I use through the four elements as a model for coaching because I believe they have a deep significance within our inner world.
Each element has its own unique character. Each represents an important aspect of how we wish to show up in the world. We all want the intimacy of water, the passion of fire, the freedom of air, and the stability of earth. Yet each must be cultivated through slightly different means.
Anyone who's pursued spiritual or healing work can see that the mind is extremely complicated. But if we can understand our complexity it can become a source of purpose. Which is why I use the metaphor of the four elements to help make connections and expand our intuitive understanding.
I love that the four elements are simple and familiar. We’ve all had countless, hands-on experiences of how these four archetypal categories look and feel in the physical world. We’ve all experienced the way water cleanses every time we wash the dishes or take a shower. Or how fire creates the energy that fuels our cars and heating.
These elements function the same way in our inner world as they do in our outer one. Their differences show that healing isn’t just one thing. Leading a fulfilling life comes from an intimate dance of multiple forces. Within this dance is an alchemy that creates the possibility for infinite potential. If we can master this inner science, we can master the very essence of life itself and live the life we were born for.
